WHY ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM THE BABY MEALS IN THE SUPERMARKET?

Our baby blends are made using only the best organic whole foods to help your baby develop and grow – vegetables, fruits, spices, herbs, pulses, legumes and healthy fats. We never use concentrates. All our ingredients are freshly prepared, raw or gently steamed and blended to preserve the maximum amount of nutrients. Our cold-pressed process uses pressure (not high heat or chemicals) to pasteurise our food and eliminate any bad bacteria. This is what keeps our product fresh and packed with all the goodness your baby needs, while maintaining textures, taste and the foods natural colours. We use lots of interesting flavours and spices to help your baby develop your baby's palate and help them learn to love food. Our blends are not mass produced by a third-party manufacturer, we make them in small batches in our Omami kitchen, just like you would at home. We also add super foods such as chia, flax and spirulina to many of our blends, to make sure they contain lots extra vitamins and micronutrients.

WHO MAKES THE OMAMI MEALS?

All of the Omami blends are developed by our founders Sallar and Lisa, in close collaboration with Brandt Maybury (Development chef and food consultant from a Michelin star background, he is a regular judge for the Great Taste Awards, World Food Innovation Awards) with NHS accredited Child Nutritionist and Weaning expert Catherine Lippe.

WHERE ARE MY OMAMI MEALS PRODUCED?

Our blends are not mass produced by a third-party manufacturer, we make them in small batches in our dedicated Omami production kitchen, just like you would at home.  We take great pride in our food safety processes and are working towards SALSA certification.

IS OMAMI ORGANIC?

We use nothing but very best organic whole foods for our blends.

ARE MY OMAMI BLENDS FRESHLY PREPARED?

All our meals are freshly made in small batches. We then use HPP (a cold-water pressure system) to inactivate any bacteria or germs, to make sure all our meals are as safe as possible for your little one.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EACH OMAMI STAGE?

Stage 1 – Curious - Smooth easy blends.
Our stage 1 blends are suitable for curious early weaners who have explored single ingredients and are ready to try new flavours.

Stage 2 - Exploring - Some texture, bigger flavours.
With a little more texture, our stage 2 blends are suitable for babies who are ready to explore a wider combination of flavours and slightly thicker textures.

Stage 3 - Adventurous - Lots of textures, adventurous tastes.
With a wider variety of flavours and textures, our stage 3 blends are suitable for babies who have been exposed to a variety of ingredients and flavours already. The thicker textures with some small lumps is a useful way to transition your baby onto chunkier foods and family foods. When your baby starts each stages depends on where your baby is on their weaning journey, every baby develops differently at a different pace.

WHAT IS COLD PRESSURE (HPP)?

The cold-pressure process applies pressure rather than heat to maintain the essential vitamins, nutrients and enzymes (plus, taste, colour and texture!) of organic produce, while extending shelf life so we have a little extra time to get our blends from our kitchen to your table. Shelf-stable baby food, on the other hand, is high heat pasteurized which affects the nutrient content, taste, colour and texture and allows it to sit on the shelf at room temperature for years.

OUR PACKAGING

WHY DON'T YOU USE POUCHES?

Pouches are some of the worst culprits for un-recyclable packaging and babies have been shown to miss out on key oral development for swallowing solids and talking when taking food directly from a squeeze pouch. These skills are learned from taking food from a spoon, or with finger foods. Babies also miss out on building a relationship with real food, as it’s hidden inside the squeeze pouch, imagine if we couldn’t see the food when we were eating it?

WHAT ARE THE POTS MADE OF?

Our pots are made from food-grade plastic, free of BPA and Phthalates, and they are completely safe for your baby. The pots are also recyclable.

ARE THE POTS MICROWAVE SAFE?

No, our meals are not meant to be microwaved and our pots are not made for extremely high heat.

CAN I RECYCLE THE DELIVERY BOX?

Our delivery box, along with everything inside it is fully recyclable.

HOW DO I RECYCLE THE ICE GEL PACKS?

Our ice packs are 100% recyclable and non-toxic. The best way to recycle your gel packs is to cut them open and dispose of the content in your rubbish bin. You can throw the cover in your recycling bin. You can also re-freeze and reuse them.

OUR FOOD & NUTRITION

ARE OMAMI BLENDS PERISHABLE?

Yes. Our blends are perishable and must be kept in the fridge.

HOW MUCH SUGAR IS IN YOUR BLENDS?

We do not use any added sugar, sweeteners or salt in our recipes. Each pot contains naturally occurring sugars, such as fruit sugar, which can vary from recipe to recipe. None of our blends have any more than 5 grams of natural occurring fruit sugar and are therefore all within the green label on the traffic light system. The great thing about our cold-pressed pasteurisation process is that it does not raise the temperature of the fruit and vegetables, which can lead to very jammy, very sweet baby food like you might find from other baby food brands.

DO YOU USE ANY PRESERVATIVES TO KEEP YOUR MEALS FRESH?

We do not use any preservatives, additives in our recipes, nor do we pasteurise them using extreme heat, which is why they need to be kept refrigerated.

WHY DON'T YOU OFFER FRUIT PUREES?

We're here to help you on your weaning journey. Babies are born loving sweet tasting foods, while other food preferences are often learned through experience and exposure. By repeatedly exposing your baby to vegetables and non-sweet foods from the very beginning, you ignite a love for vegetables, which is why we use vegetables in all of our meals. We also want to keep the naturally occurring sugars from fruit low in our in our blends to make sure we are creating perfectly nutritionally balanced food for your baby.

ARE YOUR MEALS VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN?

All our blends are plant-based, and therefore suitable for both vegans and vegetarians.

HOW MUCH IS IN EACH POT?

One pot = One meal. Each pot is 120g of beautifully balanced baby food. Remember that every baby is different and so is their appetite. If your baby doesn’t finish the whole pot or even half of it, don’t worry! Babies are very good at knowing exactly how much they need, and it also depends on the amount of milk they are having, how they are feeling that day and where they are on their weaning journey.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP THE POTS?

All our meals should be eaten within 2 weeks from the day they are delivered to you.

HOW LONG WILL THE POT STAY FRESH FOR ONCE IT'S BEEN OPENED?

Once opened, our blends should be stored sealed in the fridge and eaten within 24 hours. Our baby food pots can be unrefrigerated for up to 4 hours (longer if taken on-the-go in a cooler bag with an ice pack).  Always make sure it is cool to the touch.

HOW DO I HEAT MY OMAMI MEALS?

Our blends can be enjoyed cold, however if you prefer heating your baby’s meals, we recommend doing so by pouring them into a heat proof container, placing the container in a hot water bath and stirring until heated throughout. Always temperature test before serving warmed food before serving it to your baby and consume immediately.

CAN OMAMI MEALS BE SERVED COLD?

Our blends are designed to be just as delicious cold.

CAN I FREEZE MY OMAMI MEALS?

We recommend eating our blends fresh, within two weeks of receiving them. Freezing them and thawing them in the fridge is safe, but texture and taste may change after freezing.

IS THERE ANY PROTEIN IN YOUR BLENDS?

Yes! Many of our blends contain plant-based proteins such as beans, lentils, peas and seeds which provide plenty of fibre, micronutrients and iron for your baby.

DO YOUR BLENDS CONTAIN SUGAR?

None of our blends have any added sugar. The only sugar in our blends is the sugar that is naturally found in the whole fruits and vegetables they are made up of.

WHEN CAN I START FEEDING OMAMI MEALS TO MY BABY?

All our blends are recommended for babies who are 6 months and above, their texture vary from smooth to progressively more textured, and which stage you choose depends on where your baby is on their weaning journey.

Your baby is ready for solids by the age of 6 months when:

  • Your baby is able to keep their head and neck stable in a seated position and sit up by themselves in a highchair.
  • Your baby has the ability to pick up objects and bring them to their mouth
  • Your baby’s tongue thrust reflex is disappearing, this means that your baby does not automatically push all the food out from their mouth with their tongue
  • Your baby is able to move food around in their mouth and swallow food.

Once your baby is ready for weaning, we recommend start them off with individual savoury ingredients, such as bitter greens or other savoury vegetables, such as cauliflower or avocado, either as a puree or a finger food. Start off with small portions, keep a watchful eye over them, but don't worry too much - your baby might love or hate it, but it's all part of the process. Keep going with single ingredients over the next couple weeks, alternating them day by day. Be guided by your baby - look out for their cues and don't try to rush them into weaning. If you have any concerns, reach out to your GP to discuss your baby's needs and make a plan that works well for all of you.

IS MY BABY READY TO START EATING?

Most babies are ready to start eating solid food at 6 months, which is the recommended time to start weaning your baby. But as all humans, babies are different, and some may be ready to try solids a bit earlier than others. As your baby approaches 6 months, look out for the following signs of readiness:

  • Your baby is able to keep their head and neck stable in a seated position and sit up by themselves in a highchair.
  • Your baby has the ability to pick up objects and bring them to their mouth
  • Your baby’s tongue thrust reflex is disappearing, this means that your baby does not automatically push all the food out from their mouth with their tongue
  • Your baby is able to move food around in their mouth and swallow food.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FEED MY BABY?

Every baby moves through weaning at their own pace, and although there are no set rules, there are a few things to keep in mind when moving your baby from 1 to 2 or 3 meals a day.

Start with one small meal a day to get your baby used to mealtimes, solid foods and for them to learn the mechanism of swallowing and processing food in their mouth.

Once you and your baby feel comfortable with the 1 meal a day; your baby has learned the skills needed to swallow and process quite a bit of the food offered, and you as a parent also feel secure and confident, it might be time to progress to two meals a day. This can be as early as two weeks after you have started weaning or it may take up to 2 months to progress, both are equally normal.

Some babies are ready to have 2 meals a day at 6.5 months while others are ready for their second daily meal closer to 8 months. The age you start to wean your baby also plays a role in when your baby will be ready for more meals. The recommended age for babies to start weaning is around 6 months, however some parents may want to start weaning earlier; make sure that your baby shows all of the signs of readiness.

Once your baby is happily having two meals, and able to eat a good amount of the food offered, you can add in the third daily meal. Again, this may differ from baby to baby, but ideally babies should be introduced a third meal a day as early as 7 months or as late as 9-10 months. By 9-10 months your baby will need to have 3 daily meals.

A good general guideline is, depending on your baby is to introduce:

    6 months, one daily meal
    6.5-8 months, two daily meal
    7-9 months, 3 daily meals

If your baby is born prematurely or if they are underweight, it is always best to discuss with your doctor on how to proceed with weaning.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I FEED MY BABY?

Don’t worry about of portion sizes for babies! Your baby will let you know when they have had enough. Follow your baby’s satiation cues, and never pressure your baby to keep eating, that only creates a tense relationship to mealtimes. You'll know if they're full if they turn away, won't open their mouth, spit out food, throw food on the floor or push it away. Let your baby play with their food if they've slowed down eating, it can be a wonderful form of sensory play.

DO YOU OFFER FINGER FOOD AND SNACKS?

We do not offer finger foods at this time, but some of our more stage 3 blends have chunkier texture to help with the transition to family foods. Also, stay tuned, we are constantly adding to our range!

DO YOU OFFER FOOD FOR TODDLERS?

Our blends are currently aimed at babies between 6-12 months, they are however super healthy for anyone to eat, and a great snack for toddlers as well as older kids (and adults)!

WHY ARE YOUR BLENDS PLANT BASED?

Our blends are currently plant based as we want to be inclusive of everyone. We want to help families everywhere to feed their children real food, and at the moment our focus is on fruit, vegetables and plant-based protein. Parents can however choose to add meat or seafood to our meals by serving it as finger foods on the side. Many of our blends do however contain plant-based protein, in the form of beans, lentils, peas and seeds.

WHY DO I NEED TO KEEP MY OMAMI MEALS REFRIGERATED?

We use a Cold Pressure technique to pasteurise our baby meals, which is an alternative to heat pasteurisation found in most supermarket baby food. The cold-water pressure inactivates harmful bacteria while preserving all of the goodness - like vitamins, nutrients, taste, colour and texture. Because we use cold pressure pasteurisation, we do not need to add any additives, preservatives, colours or stabilizers to our food. Because of this, the food is perishable, so we recommend keeping it cool in the fridge until it's time to eat it.

ARE YOUR BLENDS NUTRITIONALLY BALANCED FOR BABIES?

Our baby meals are carefully designed with the help from nutritionists, weaning experts and a team of chefs to ensure they are well balanced and nutritionally optimised for your baby and their development, while tasting incredible. Although we don't use animal protein in our meals, many of them do contain protein from plant-based sources such as legumes, grains and seeds.

WHY DOES MY BABY GAG WHEN EATING?

Don't worry - it's just a reflex! Babies often need to be exposed to new foods multiple times (10 - 15 times) before learning to accept it and they can sometimes gag when they try a new flavour or texture.

    ALLERGIES

ARE YOUR MEALS SAFE FOR BABIES WITH ALLERGIES?

None of our meals contain any of the 14 major allergens (dairy, soy, nuts, peanuts, shellfish, gluten, celery, egg, fish, sesame, molluscs, lupin, sulphur dioxide and sulphites). Nor do we process anything containing these ingredients in our dedicated kitchen. However, we cannot guarantee that our ingredients have been free of all contact with foods containing any of these allergens before they arrived in our kitchen. Everything we use is declared on our packaging, and there is never anything else that goes into our blends.

IS THERE GLUTEN IN ANY OMAMI MEALS?

None of our meals are made from ingredients that contain gluten, and we do not process anything containing gluten in our dedicated kitchen. However, we cannot guarantee that our ingredients have been free of all contact with foods containing gluten before it arrived in our kitchen.

    ARE OMAMI MEALS DAIRY-FREE?

Our meals are fully plant based so they do not contain dairy. We have many parents who incorporate dairy into our meals. You can swirl some yogurt, breastmilk or formula into our blends if your baby loves dairy. For plant based alternative, you can always add some coconut-based yoghurt instead.

DO MY OMAMI MEALS CONTAIN NUTS?

Currently, none of our meals contain any nuts that are prone to cause allergies. Some of the blends do however contain coconut milk, which is not considered a common allergen food.

    TROUBLESHOOTING & PLACING ORDERS

WHAT IF MY BABY DOESN'T LIKE THE BLENDS?

We are all born to prefer sweeter food, and other food preferences are often learned through experience and exposure. For some foods, such as bitter greens or more savoury flavours, it may take up to 15 times before your baby will learn to like them. If your baby doesn’t like a food on the first try, don’t give up! Try again in a few days’ time. It often just takes repeated exposure before they learn to like something. It is also completely normal for your baby love something one day, and not the next. Their likes and dislikes develop and vary as their grow, and so do their appetites. It's important to keep trying to incorporate new flavours to help your baby develop their palate so that they'll accept and love a wider range of foods later in life.

CAN I GET A REFUND IF MY BABY DOESN'T LIKE THEIR BLENDS?

Unfortunately, we will not be able to refund or offer credits for the blends your baby does not love at the first taste. Remember that most of our food preferences are taught, and a weaning baby is at the very beginning of learning. Babies palates change constantly, and some foods can take 10-15 times before your baby grow to love. Frequent exposure to a variety of foods, also the ones that your baby does not like instantly is an important part of their weaning journey, to make sure that they learn to love a wide spectrum of foods later on in life. Keep rotating the different flavours, and if there is some your baby do not like, just alternate with the ones your little one does love and try the tricky one again in a few days. Research shows that early repeated exposure to different foods makes it more likely for your baby to love lots of different foods later in their lives. And at Omami we are all about the love of food!
